Coal Bunker SIP construction

Our Building Method

Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs)

High-performance building panels for Coal Bunker builds - delivering exceptional structural integrity, thermal performance, and energy efficiency.

What are SIPs?

Structural Insulated Panels, known as SIPs, are high-performance building panels made from two structural OSB skins bonded to an EPS insulation core. This forms a single, rigid panel that is lightweight, strong, and highly insulating, helping Coal Bunker deliver buildings with excellent structural integrity and thermal performance.

SIPs have been used internationally for decades and are a well-established method of modern construction. In the UK, they are increasingly chosen for projects where build quality, energy efficiency, and predictable performance matter.

SIP construction process

Why Coal Bunker Builds with SIPs

SIPs are a key part of how Coal Bunker achieves efficient, comfortable spaces. Their insulation and airtightness potential helps reduce heat loss, improve temperature stability, and support a more consistent internal environment for year-round use.

Fast, Accurate, and Reliable Installation

SIPs can be used for walls, roofs, and floors to create a continuous insulated envelope. Panels are typically joined using timber splines, insulated I-beams, or SIP splines, and secured with components such as sole plates and ring beams. For Coal Bunker, this approach supports a faster build programme and a precise fit on site, while helping to reduce thermal bridging compared with many traditional build-ups.

Key Benefits of SIP Construction

High levels of thermal performance
Improved energy efficiency
Enhanced airtightness potential
Reduced risk of shrinkage-related movement
Reduced thermal bridging when detailed correctly
Rapid weather-tightness due to speed of enclosure

SIP System Components

The materials used in Coal Bunker builds, selected for performance, durability, and sustainability.

OSB3 Structural Board

OSB3 Structural Board

commonly 11mm

  • Precision-engineered structural board used widely in construction
  • Moisture-resistant grade suitable for structural applications
  • Responsibly sourced options available, including FSC-certified supply
  • Low added-formaldehyde options are available, depending on specification
EPS Insulation Core

EPS Insulation Core

often minimum 70 grade

  • Rigid insulation core with a strong strength-to-weight ratio
  • Very low thermal conductivity compared with many traditional materials
  • Recyclable and chemically stable, with no CFC or HCFC blowing agents
  • Flame-retardant grades are commonly used within building products
C24 Graded Structural Timber

C24 Graded Structural Timber

  • Structural timber commonly used in UK construction
  • Responsibly sourced options available, including FSC-certified supply
  • Moisture-resistant treatments can be specified where required
  • Naturally low thermal conductivity compared with many structural materials
Glulam Structural Beams

Glulam Structural Beams

where long spans are needed

  • Engineered timber designed for strength over longer spans
  • Can reduce reliance on steel in certain structural designs
  • Responsibly sourced options available
  • Timber-based structure can support lower embodied carbon goals, depending on the overall specification

Note: Certifications and compliance (for example, BBA certification and Eurocode design compliance) depend on the exact products specified for a project. Coal Bunker can provide product documentation where required.

SIP panel manufacturing

How SIP Panels are Made

SIP panels are manufactured in controlled conditions to ensure accuracy and consistency. In a typical process, OSB skins are bonded to an EPS core using a high-strength adhesive, then pressed and cured to form a rigid laminated panel.

Panels can then be cut and prepared to precise dimensions to support an efficient, accurate installation on site. This factory-controlled manufacturing process ensures consistent quality and reduces waste compared to traditional on-site construction methods.
